Drawing a Dancer with Nitram Charcoal: An Artist’s Study in Light, Form & Tone | Nathaniel Goetz & Miano Academy of Art

Artwork by Nathaniel Goetz. Model: Jamie C. Saunders. Used with permission.

“In this drawing, I capture a dancer in a quiet, intimate moment, pausing to tend to her ankle. Working as an apprentice in an atelier-based traditional studio, my focus is always on observation—learning how to truly convey form, light, and emotion.

The Nitram Charcoal Starter Kit has become an essential part of that process. It gives me a remarkable range of tones, from rich, velvety blacks to the most delicate, controlled hatch marks. I can build broad, confident strokes for structure and then refine them into finely modelled transitions that describe subtle shifts in light and shadow.

Its versatility across different surfaces makes the drawing process feel closer to painting, allowing me to layer values with precision. With Nitram Charcoal, I can capture the full tonal range of nature, bringing depth, clarity, and life to my studies.”
