A BRIDGE BETWEEN MEDIUMS

“Self-Portrait in Charcoal", 2024 by Krasimir S. Marinov, 30x40 cm, Nitram Charcoal on Arches Ingres Paper

WITH NITRAM CHARCOAL

“This portrait was completed as part of the preparation for my summer workshop on figure drawing at the Angel Academy of Art, Florence. The intention was to show the handling of Nitram Charcoal.

The unique nature of Nitram Charcoal allows for the perfect stepping stone between graphite and oil paint, allowing the student to experience a medium with greater complexity. The movability of the softer grade of charcoal is akin to oil paint, while the harder sticks allow for a precision very similar to that of graphite.

I particularly enjoy both working and teaching charcoal because of its tremendous value in the artistic education of any artist. Mastery of charcoal is imperative for every great painter, as it is the cornerstone that enables one to wield paint with unparalleled skill and finesse.”

The Angel Academy of Art offers the opportunity to learn drawing and painting in the heart of Florence, just as so many of the Renaissance Masters did. Whether you are a beginner looking to explore Realism in Florence or an experienced scholar looking to manifest a career, our mission is to provide the experience and skills that you need to succeed. The curriculum and techniques used at the Angel Academy of Art, Florence, are a result of over 50 years of research and experimentation. The aim of the Angel Academy of Art, Florence, is to teach the methods by which representational paintings of the highest quality can be created. From maestro Pietro Annigoni, under whom he studied in the 1960s, Michael John Angel learned how the centuries-old methods of teaching representational painting had all but disappeared by the late 1900s. Maestro Angel then began to research these methods—a job that was to take many years. Over time, and with a lot of experiments in the studio, it became possible to reconstruct a step-by-step process whereby these paintings and drawings were made. Students can enrol in the Angel Academy of Art, Florence, for a summer workshop, intensive course, or full-diploma programme, each of these cover techniques instrumental to mastering Realism in drawing and painting.
