PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE

WITH NITRAM CHARCOAL

"Enchanting" by Tusai Isty, Nitram Charcoal & white chalk on Arches paper, 58cm x 40cm

“Enchanting” is a drawing I created in 2021, inspired by a meaningful experience in Florence. Upon returning home, those memories led me to create this artwork.

I am honoured that “Enchanting” received First Place (Best Drawing) at the Almenara Art Prize International Art Competition in November 2025. The work was also a finalist in the ARC competition and previously received a Selected 50 recognition from the Portrait Society of America. Exhibiting among less than 1% of 3,810 total entries at the Almenara Art Prize is one of the highest distinctions I have received. I sincerely thank the jury members, organizers and sponsors of the Almenara Art Prize for their recognition and support.

I believe that technique, study, and skill are essential in creating high-quality art, but the choice of materials plays an equally important role, both from an archival standpoint and in achieving refined detail and desired effects. I work with Nitram Charcoal for its exceptional range of hardness and its sensitivity to detail, which allows me to make informed choices at different stages of the drawing process. In my pursuit of excellence, I consistently use the highest-quality art materials.

My name is Isty, a Romanian/Hungarian artist based in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. I’ve been drawn to art since childhood, when I began copying illustrations from magazines and books. Over the years, I’ve focused on continually improving my skills through self-study and research into old-master techniques. At 29, I refined my practice at academies in Florence and in Russian ateliers (2019–2021), building on many years of independent study. Guidance from artists around the world, along with international recognition, has shaped my development, and I’m grateful for those experiences.
